Topic: Predict Turbulence-generating Noise for Quiet Environments

Abstract   The increasing requirement for quiet environments raises the needs to control turbulence-generated noise, which are typically resulted from new-energy automobiles, high-speed trains, wind turbines, civil airplanes and underwater vehicles. Those needs largely enhance the investigation of turbulence-generated noise. It presents two challenges to our prediction: the first is that turbulence-generated noise exhibits the coupling of spatial and temporal scales. However, the previous study focuses on spatial scales and there exist very limited results on temporal scales. The second is that turbulent-generated noise often occurs with complex geometric boundaries. Resolving the noise generated by flows near complex geometric boundaries is very difficult even using supercomputers. In this talk, I will introduce the recent development on space-time correlation modeling for understanding turbulence-generated noise. Through it, I will present time-accurate large eddy simulation for predicting turbulence-generated noise. Some examples of interests are briefly discusses.
